There is little doubt that alcohol affects male fertility negatively. The more pertinent question is : how much alcohol is too much to threaten fertility and what damage to fertility will too much alcohol cause?

So how much is too much? Studies have shown that drinking more than four ounces of alcohol a day is bad for your reproductive system. As an example, a bottle of beer or a glass of wine contains about half an ounce of alcohol. Alcohol concentration depends largely on the kind of drink that is consumed but taking beer as a guide, 8 bottles of beer a day will give you 4 ounces of alcohol content. This is certainly going to do harm to your fertility. Here’s how alcohol actually affects male fertility :-

1. Alcoholism (excessive consumption of alcohol) raises the estrogen level in men. This will in turn interfere with his hormones and sperm development. Why? Because alcohol is a toxin that tends to kill sperm generating cells in men. Worse still, chronic alcoholism can cause atrophy in the testicles, gynecomastia and the lack of sexual interest.

2. Excessive alcohol consumption causes a disorder in the gonads resulting in changes in the structure of the testicles and decline in the T serum level. A drop in the is T serum level can cause male infertility.

3. The toxicity of excessive alcohol can reduce sperm density or sperm count. Typically the volume of a single ejaculate is 3 milliliters (sometimes reaching six milliliter per ejaculate) with 120 million sperm cells per ml. But alcohol can cause a drastic reduction in these figures. In addition, alcohol can result in abnormalities in sperm size, shape and the sperm tail. Sperm motility can also be affected negatively.

4. Excessive alcohol alters the regular oval head and a straight tail of the healthy sperm cell. This change in sperm shape can seriously compromise the viability of the spermatozoa. Also, chronic alcoholism damages the sperm morphology that often has irreversible effects.

(Note: Drinking too much alcohol can also cause impotence and liver damage)

If in doubt, do a semen analysis test to determine the state of your fertility. Sperms normally take about three months to develop. So if you want to have your sperm analyzed, you must abstain from sexual activity during this period to get a clearer and more reliable reading regarding the health and the condition of the sperm that is produced.

You don’t always have to see a Urologist if you want to do semen analysis. You can save yourself a lot of money by using a laboatory technician instead. Another option is to use a semen analysis test kit which can do the job for you in the privacy of your home. You can get a good, basic information about the health of your semen and sperm.

Just like in men, alcoholism also can also affect the reproductive health of mothers too. Some of the causes are : ovarian dysfunction, amenorrhea, anovulation, luteal phase defect, hyperprolactinemia etc.

To conclude, if you are serious about getting a baby, then curbing your drinking habit is an important consideration.

Have you been trying to get pregnant but can’t? A male fertility test can help resolve the question of whether it’s you or your partner that needs fertility treatment. Also called a semen analysis or a sperm count, this non-invasive procedure measures the amount and quality of his semen and sperm. As Dr. Werthman of the Center for Male Reproductive Medicine explains, this simple test can tell how many sperm are present, how many appear normal, and how many are active.

Your partner may not like the idea of getting tested. But it is crucial that he does before you and your doctor make a final decision to have you undergo any invasive or complicated fertility procedure.

What a semen analysis can tell you

Aside from sperm count and quality, a semen analysis will also tell if there is an existing or potential medical or reproductive problem. For instance, a higher white blood cell count may indicate inflammation or infection. If his test results confirm this or any other health concern, he will most likely need to undergo a thorough evaluation so that your doctor can determine what’s wrong with him.

Perhaps more importantly, the semen analysis (together with a postcoital test) can help determine which fertility therapy is best for you as a couple. The postcoital test is a two-hour procedure that shows if your cervical mucus still contains sperm six to ten hours after sexual intercourse. Dr. Bill Yee, director of the in vitro fertilization program at Long Beach [California] Memorial Medical Center, says sperm retention is crucial in telling if you can get pregnant. Dr. Yee says this female exam should only be done if the semen analysis is normal.

What a semen analysis cannot tell you

A semen analysis is an initial, standard exam with limited results that does not analyze the following sperm conditions:

1. Sperm health. A sperm analysis will not tell you if your partner’s sperm are healthy enough to get you pregnant. Instead, a more sophisticated sperm chromatin structure assay (SCSA) exam can find that out for you.

2. Appropriate therapy. In case the result turns out to be abnormal, the analysis will not say what type of therapy will be appropriate to treat your partner.

3. Sperm integrity among other important functions. A semen analysis will not tell if the sperm can locate and penetrate an egg.

4. Viability for natural conception. Finally, the sperm sample submitted for evaluation is not enough to holistically ascertain if your partner’s sperm can get you pregnant, naturally, via sexual intercourse.

What’s next?

Additional tests may be advised by your physician, if your partner’s test result is poor. Your physician may or may not recommend the following highly specialized exams:

Sperm Survival Test

A simple test that checks sperm sample activity 24 hours after being kept in a lab incubator. Movement under the microscope is a sign of good health and “performance.”

Bovine Cervical Mucus Test

Somewhat similar to the postcoital test, except that the mucus used comes from a cow (bovine), instead of from you. The reason for this is its commercial and readily available in test kits, even abroad.

Semen Culture Test

A test that checks the semen sample for bad bacteria and their sensitivity to antibiotics.

Is the test worth taking?

Yes. Despite its limitations it is well worth it for your partner to get tested. In the best case scenario, it will save you and your partner the financial and emotional pain that normally accompany advanced fertility treatments.

Knowing his true fertility condition will also shed light on his medical condition–if he needs to change or improve certain aspects of his lifestyle to help maximize his sexual and overall health.

Whatever the result, assure him of your unwavering love and support. Let him know that getting tested will be worth it as it will bring more clarity to the determination of which strategies need to be undertaken to help you get pregnant.

The woman is not necessarily always responsible for infertility in the couple, many a times the male partner may be the one who is infertile. Infertility can be observed due to the male partner, or the female partner, and the chances are 50-50. Sometimes infertility can be a result due to both the partners as well. It is very important to know more about male infertility before you come to any conclusion. IVF male infertility may be a topic of importance for you.The Chief Causes Of Male InfertilityThere are many reasons that can cause the male partner to face fertility issues. Sexually transmitted diseases that may cause the sperm ducts to be blocked or even lower the sperm count can show hindrances with your fertility. However these can be cured with the usage of antibiotics. Any sort of blockage in the path of sperms through the vas deference or the epididymis can also lower the sperm count to zero, and needs surgical cure.Varicocele is the dilation of the scrotum veins that can also cause infertility because of the reduced production of sperms as a result of the increase in temperature. This is one of the chief causes of infertility in men. Other causes include abnormalities of the male reproductive organs, and sometimes even genetic issues that cause fertility problems to get inherited. Many young men nowadays opt for vasectomy but might wish to reverse the surgery at a later stage, fertility cannot always be guaranteed with such a surgery. While this is quite possible with a proper surgery, sometimes even a perfect and successful surgery doesn’t reverse the infertility. This is because of the body’s adaptation against the production and deliverance of sperms. This is also another reason to see infertility in men.The CureYou could either opt for some surgical procedures to help you with the problems mentioned above or you could even go for an IVF male infertility treatment. Even though it might be quite an embarrassing topic to talk on with a doctor, there are many people all around who suffer from IVF male infertility problems. You might not even be suffering from an infertility issue for all you know. Consulting a doctor to get your suspicions clarified and treated is the best option to go for.Get online and look for the best examples of the clinics that deal with IVF male infertility. There should be plenty of options for you. Look for the ones that offer to be the most suitable and reliable. Going through the reviews can be a great way to find out more about the clinic near to your home. You should always choose to consult an expert for advice and opinion instead of not helping yourself and doing nothing about your condition. Find out your options with IVF male infertility and check out the cure available for you.

Male Infertility

Infertility in men is about as common as infertility in women. Infertility is described as the inability to conceive after about one year of sexual intercourse without the use of contraceptives. If age is a factor, then you may want to consult a doctor or infertility specialist after about six months of trying, as fertility decreases with age. Some causes for infertility can be harder to treat the longer they are left without intervention, so don’t hesitate to seek advice early if you suspect that infertility may be a factor for you.

Many things can cause infertility in men. Illness, disease, injury, obstruction in the tubes of the testes, diet, weight and activity levels are only some of the causes of male infertility. Common causes of infertility are low sperm count, dysfunctional or immobile sperm, and impaired sperm delivery. Men can be born with some of these conditions, or they can develop them later in life.

When determining the cause of infertility in a couple, the man and woman should be examined. The procedures for examining male infertility are generally simple and non-invasive. Your doctor will check for sperm production, irregularities in the testes, and hormonal imbalances among other possible causes. A semen analysis will tell if the ejaculate has adequate seminal fluid to allow for sperm movement. The sperm will be checked for number of sperm, the shape and structure of the sperm, mobility, seminal fluid and total volume or amount of ejaculate.

If there is no sperm present in the seminal fluid, then it is termed azoospermia. This can be caused by a malformation in the testes or a possible obstruction in one of the ducts necessary to deliver the sperm effectively into the ejaculate. If sperm is present in the fluid, then it will be tested for abnormalities. If a significant number of sperm are abnormal, then they can be a cause for infertility. Your infertility specialist may wish to perform a sperm-mucus interaction test. This test will determine if the sperm are able to live within and move through cervical mucus and thus, through the female reproductive system.

Your doctor may also wish to conduct a sperm penetration assay. This will determine your sperm’s ability to latch on and penetrate an egg’s outer layer. Infection, disease and illness will be looked for. These things can affect your testosterone and sperm production.

About half of all male infertility cases can be treated through assisted reproduction. Your infertility specialist will determine which treatments will be best for you depending on your situation. If there is a neurological reason that ejaculate can not be obtained, such as spinal cord injury, then you may be a candidate for electroejaculation. This process stimulates the body to excrete semen. If an obstruction, injury or deformity is present, then a surgeon can sometimes retrieve sperm surgically from the sperm duct. Sometimes this procedure can be conducted with a needle and surgery isn’t required. Sperm washing refers to the method that mixes sperm with a washing medium, and concentrates the healthiest sperm into an inert buffered fluid that can be used for intrauterine insemination, increasing your chances of conception.

Talk with your doctor and infertility specialist about possible causes and treatments of male infertility. Remember that about half of all infertile men can be treated and conception can be possible for you.
