Despite all the major advances in assisted reproductive therapy, some women have no other option but surgical intervention. Many times the cause of infertility can be an abnormality in the reproductive tract itself. The good news about female reproductive surgery is it can usually be performed through what is called laparoscopy, or a hysteroscopy. Both of these procedures are minimally invasive and offer optimal outcomes.

A laparoscopy is a procedure performed under general anesthesia; during this procedure the surgeon will place one to three small incisions on the abdomen, and another in the belly button. The incision in the belly button is for a camera, and the other tiny incisions are for small tools with long handles. This way the surgeon can move and grab things without having to actually cut the patient open. Common conditions that a laparoscopy can help correct are:

If you are experiencing some symptoms that seem to be getting progressively worse each month then it could be endometriosis. Endometriosis can cause infertility and severe abdominal pain. Sometimes there are no symptoms at all and it is only discovered when you experience infertility and go for a diagnosis.

Usually pelvic pain is the number one complaint among women with endometriosis. Pain generally worsens as menstruation approaches and lessens when it is over. Pain can be severe or mild and the pain level is not a good indicator of how severe or widespread the endometriosis is. Many women say that they have extreme pain during pelvic exams or intercourse. Endometriosis is a progressive disease and symptoms generally get worse and more noticeable over time.

Irregular or heavy periods are common with endometriosis patients. Back pain is also a common complaint. If the endometrial implants are near nerves or cause scar tissue to grow, then pain can become severe. Some other symptoms of endometriosis include constipation, diarrhea, and blood in the urine. If endometriosis spreads to the lungs or brain, then severe headaches, seizures and coughing up blood are possible signs. It is rare for endometriosis to spread this far. It is normally localized in the lower abdomen and affects the ovaries and uterus.

If you are having any symptoms of endometriosis it is important to see your doctor right away. This is especially true if fertility is a concern. If you are having trouble getting pregnant, it could be very important to see an infertility specialist as soon as possible. Since endometriosis is a progressive disease, there can be little time to waste. Consider immediate diagnosis and treatment if you plan on having children.

The only way for endometriosis to be definitively diagnosed is through a laparoscopic exploratory surgery. Laparoscopy is minimally invasive and can give your doctor a clear view of your uterus, ovaries and surrounding abdominal cavity. They can also take biopsies of suspicious tissues during this procedure.

Laparoscopy is usually performed under general anesthesia and is done through a very small opening in your belly. First, the doctor will inflate your abdomen with carbon dioxide. This gives them a lot of room to look around. The laparoscope is a long thin tube that allows the surgeon to look for implants and take biopsies.

If endometriosis is found, then medications may be prescribed or surgery may need to be performed. Treatment can depend on whether or not infertility is a concern.

Do not delay seeking treatment if you suspect endometriosis. No one should ever ignore endometriosis symptoms or assume that they are normal menstrual pains.

Endometriosis is one of the causes of infertility in females. This is due to abnormality in the tissue that lines the uterus. The ratio of infertility due to endometriosis is fifty percent in women across the World. This can be a painful condition and requires urgent treatment. The cells flourish in cavity of the uterus especially on the uterus. Hormonal changes are responsible in the latter case.

Other symptoms could be irregularity in urinary tract with urge to urinate frequently. There could be nausea and vomiting associated with menstrual flow which can be heavy and fatigue. Depression, anxiety and mood swings are often seen. Pain in the back, thighs and legs, mild fever and headache are common in females suffering from endometriosis.

The available treatment for endometriosis is minimally invasive using laparoscopy and robotic procedures. This technology is available in most of the infertility treatment clinics. Using this method the success rate of conception is very high in the females. Many gynecologists use a vaginal approach avoiding external incision.

The abnormality whence severe menstrual pain and bleeding is there then it can often be associated with infertility. The young females are more susceptible where symptoms appear before or after teen age.

There is no absolute method to prevent endometriosis. Weight reduction and taking birth control medication often helps. Pain in the abdomen, fallopian tubes and intestine is not a sure shot symptom of endometriosis in vast cases the pain is often mild. On the contrary extreme discomfort could be associated with mild case of the abnormality. The cyst formation can lead to further discomfort and rupture of the cyst calls for a medical emergency.

Careful scrutiny patient history of pathological nature, physical examination and frank discussion are a prerequisite for accurate diagnosis. This can be little award for women living in traditional conservative societies. Ultra sound and MRI are helpful in discovering cysts and large areas where endometriosis is present. Small areas are not diagnosed using these methods hence laparoscopy and biopsy are also required.

The success in treatment of infertility has increased since last decade with new developments and research. The infertility clinics have become better equipped. The treatment has become affordable as well especially in third World countries like India. This is due to cheaper medications and accommodation in hospitals or hotels. The cost of skilled manpower required is less in India and other Asian countries. The treatment is advance and on par with developed countries with expert gynecologists and embryologists in charge.

1. Severe period pain is normal: Doctors of the 19th century saw women with this problem as part of their frail with unstable psychological constitutions. Though this attitude to women changed in the next century, women who sought relief from this condition were told that their pain was ‘normal’, or just ‘in their heads’.Though girls and women often do suffer period pain, yet if the pain interferes with their daily functioning, it is due to a condition such as Endometriosis, and must be investigated by a doctor.

2. Too young to have Endometriosis: Judging by your age, the doctor who examines your condition might not suspect that you have Endometriosis but diagnose it as period pain, and in all likelihood, may treat you for the latter. In earlier times, the popular belief that teenagers were not affected by Endometriosis came from the view that Endometriosis could only be diagnosed with a laparoscope and during a laparoscopy, done as a last resort on women in their 30s or 40s. Therefore, Endometriosis was believed to be a disease or disorder of women of that age group alone.

Laparoscopy was used to examine women in their 20s and 30s who had infertility problems. From this, doctors realized that Endometriosis could affect younger women too. So they revised the age group for endometriosis to cover women from their late 20s and early 30s to their 40s.

A study conducted also found that women diagnosed for Endometriosis between 25-35 years experienced their first symptoms of it in their teens. It also found that pain symptoms began on an average at age 22 years, and could go on till 46 years. This proves that women in their teens or early 20s were as susceptible to Endometriosis as older women.

3. Menopause cures Endometriosis: Menopause can cause a great reduction in the Endometriosis symptoms because of the drastic change in hormonal levels during this time. However, this isn’t always the case and the Endometriosis symptoms can remain long after the cessation of natural hormonal activity during menopause.

4. To get rid of Endometriosis, get pregnant: Fortunately, the myth that pregnancy cures Endometriosis is slowly disappearing. However, it is not disappearing fast enough! The reality is that pregnancy-like hormonal drug treatments-usually suppresses the symptoms of Endometriosis but does not eradicate the disease itself.

Therefore, symptoms usually recur after the birth of a child. Most women can delay the return of symptoms by breastfeeding, but only while breastfeeding is frequent and intense enough to suppress the menstrual cycle.

5. Endometriosis causes infertility: Unfortunately, women are often told that Endometriosis causes infertility. However, there are no statistics to indicate the percentage of women with Endometriosis who do not have children due to this. So, there is no reliable way of linking the two problems in a cause-and-effect manner.

But it is widely believed that as the severity of Endometriosis increases, the rate of infertility also increases proportionately. However, gynecologists have found that about 60-70 percent of women with Endometriosis are fertile and that half that number who suffers from this infertility problem ultimately does conceive.

6. Infertility is usually caused by scarring of the fallopian tubes: More often than not, you do get to hear that Endometriosis is a cause of infertility because of the scarring of the fallopian tubes. However, this is a fallacy. Really, endometrial implants are hardly ever found on the fallopian tubes. So, the beliefs that Endometriosis causes scarring of the fallopian tubes or infertility are wrong and must not be believed.

7. Hormonal treatments treat the condition: For many years, synthetic hormonal drugs such as the Pill, Provera, Danazol and Zoladex have used to treat Endometriosis. But really these drugs only help suppress the symptoms rather than cure the problem. Once you stop taking the drugs, the symptoms usually return.

Research shows that symptoms usually return within eighteen months after drug treatments have stopped. It isn’t uncommon for women to be taking five different drugs one after another, have had operations and still be in pain. These drug and surgical treatments still do not get to the root of the problem to promote healing Endometriosis.
