I am older ttc, 38 years old. Been trying for 4 months now with no luck. Basically, I have been ovulating and bd’ing on the rght days. If nothing happens this month I will call my regular ob/gyn for a checkup. How much can he help me? Do I go to him first and then get a referal to a RE immediately. I don’t want to waste time now. I feel like I will be needing IUI with injectables or should I go straight to IVF.

35 and older is considered advanced maternal age. At 38, you should see a doctor if you don’t conceive by 6 months. Personally, I would go straight to an RE. OBGYNs can only go so far and only know so much. If you’re seriously not wanting to waste time, see an RE. He/she will run fertility tests, review your history, discuss your plans, and decide what course of treatment to take. You may start with Clomid for a few cycles, before considering injectables or IUI. Your partner will also be tested before any treatment begins.
Good luck.

Yea you will have to go to a specialist for this. Even at 38, your doctor may want you to try naturally for 6 months so if you want to get a referral immediatley you might want to tell him it’s been that long already. As you probably know already, IUI usually isn’t covered by insurance unless you have super great coverage and can cost $1000-1500 each cycle (hopefully the first time will be successful though). Also they’ll usually want a sample from hubbie before they schedule you to make sure that he has good stuff. IMO you should try IUI for a few months before making the jump to IVF which can cost 10xs as much. Good luck on your journey!
